Hi, I’m Sarah!
In 2008 I had just finished running my second marathon in Madison, Wisconsin. The next day I immediately wanted another race and another goal to train for. I’d recently been reading books about famous runners and their life journeys with running. I was inspired by Bart Yasso’s travels around the globe and determination in overcoming adversity in so many ways. I was amazed and intrigued by Dean Karnazes expedition of 50 marathons in 50 states in 50 days.
I wanted a goal, a dream, something to work for throughout life that would combine my love for running, traveling, and exploring new places. It was then that I decided to run 50 marathons in 50 states by my 50th birthday.
Why by my 50th birthday? Well, I’m also an obsessive lover of travel, fashion, shoes, and photography-also expensive hobbies. Being a teacher means I can’t do/have it all at once. In addition, I want to make each state not just a race, but a chance to explore that area and its claims to fames. I love trying food from local restaurants, sampling new local beer, and enjoying nature unique to an area. I want to make sure I don’t just run a race in a state and check it off. I want to make time to explore that state, too. I also don’t want to sacrifice non-50 state races in my quest for 50 in 50. My timeline seems like a great way to stretch out my dream, maintain the healthy, active lifestyle I so enjoy, and truly make it about the journey.
In April 2015 I had my first child, a boy. That significant moment made me a mama and also forever changed the way I look at and prioritize my life. I was even more relieved that my goal was and is about the journey and not rushing to cross a finish line. 18 months later we added a daughter to the mix in October 2016. Journey it is! Being a mother runner adds a whole new element to balancing life and working towards this goal. Despite not dedicating as much time to my goals as I once did, I’m still planning to accomplish this goal.
Here I will share my ups, downs, and in betweens as I run my way to my goal. It is my journey of sneaks and stilettos. You can contact me with questions, suggestions, anything at sneaksandstilettos@gmail.com. I’d love to hear from you!
Awesome goal, Sarah! Are you based in Wisconsin if you started there? I’m in LaCrosse. Always happy to meet fellow midwest writers. Either way, I love your goal and that you’re including travel in it. What a cool way to see the world and share your ideas and learnings along that journey. Much success to you on your journey! I look forward to following along. 🙂
Thanks, Jess. The goal to run a marathon in each state and travel definitely keeps me motivated most of the time. I do live in Wisconsin-near La Crosse. Having a long-term goal to train through our cold, brutal winters is also a must. Thanks for stopping by. I look forward to reading more about your adventures, too!
