{Friday Fab 5-At the Lake}

This week has been a whirlwind of family, unpacking and repacking, and time with friends. I have not been using technology much as I have not had a moment to and somehow it seems better this way . In an effort to live in the moment and enjoy sweet summertime I’m not posting a Friday Fab 5 post today because I’m at the lake with some great people. I’ll be back next week with two marathon race reports (states 15 and 16) and a full Friday fab 5 post. Blogging online is great, but real-life is awesome!

Happy Weekend!

{Friday Fab 5-Best Burgers Ever, Trail Running Shoes, Grilled Veggies, …}

{#1-Peppercorn-Crusted BBQ-Ranch Burgers with Chili-Lime Crunchies}
Shocker alert! I have another recipe from Iowa Girl Eats to recommend. Memorial Day is one of those days that conjures up thoughts of sunshine, American pride and grilling. I came across this recipe last week and knew we HAD to make it Monday. These burgers were amazing. Since I’m the only person in the world who hates ranch dressing I did not mix mine with BBQ. For those ranch lovers out there i.e. everyone else on the planet, you’ll love the BBQ-Ranch combo. Add this recipe to your next grill out plans.

{#2-Grilled Veggies}
Since the focus of our meal was these burgers, and they seemed super filling, I wanted something light and yummy to go with. I love roasting veggies on the grill during the summer and peppers in four colors seemed like the best choice. It was.

{#3-Must complete this mile!}

This was me Wednesday night. I got back to my house from my hilly run and was not quite to seven miles yet. I did what any number/Garmin obsessed runner does and ran around little loops by my house until I heard the comfort of the familiar chirp and felt the mile vibration on my wrist. Now I could be done. Does anyone else do this? I tend to waiver back and forth between obsessed and run free.

{#4-Trail Running Shoes…err not!}

The other day I sort of just realized I don’t own trail running shoes and my first 50k is oh, next week! I think it is a little too late for that, but I don’t even know where to begin. I will be wearing my trusty old Mizuno Wave Riders, but am a bit nervous about this. I know the trails I’m going to be running are not too technical so they should work. Anyone have recommendations on trail running shoes? I read reviews in Trail Runner magazine last weekend, but feel overwhelmed. Where to start?

For a sport that really requires so little gear, how can I need so much running gear? I do mean need, too! My birthday wish lists sure have changed over the past few years since running my first marathon. Forget the romantic stuff, I want Body Glide and tech material gear. I can’t be alone on this can I?

Happy Friday!

{End of Summer Thoughts}

Back to school. Back to school to prove to dad I’m not a fool. Well, sort of. Today ,Yesterday Two days ago was the first day of school and the return of the crazy life. Before things get too busy, as you can see in the prior crossed out words things have already started to get busy, I wanted to take a few moments to savor my many great summer moments and memories while also reflecting on my 2013 goals.

This summer I had the chance to run some great miles in great places before and even after hurting myself. In June I was ramping up my mileage in what I was planning to be a new PR attempt in September. I was putting in some great mileage weeks and even ran a few two a days. I met goal #2 on my 2013 list by running my fifth half marathon this year; this is the most I’ve completed in a year. In October I will look to add on to this goal at the Honky Tonk Half in Wisconsin Dells. June also brought the chance to run in several locations in Houston, TX while visiting my sister.

The month of July began on the road with chances to run in more beautiful places (with more great people) like…
Mustang State Park-Padre Island,

Ocean Drive Corpus Christi,

St. Louis, Missouri!

I got to visit some great places (and people) in Texas such as…

I, well really we, but you know whatever Ms. K. wants is what Ms. K gets, so I got to visit New Orleans…

And Memphis.

Then came the injury of the summer during what would have been my sixth half marathon this year, the Dances With Dirt Half Marathon. Little did I know it wouldn’t be a simple two or three weeks off. I’m still dealing with swelling after each longer run and when standing on my feet all day. The injury though was responsible for me doing something I hadn’t done in far too long-biking!

August snuck in faster than I care to admit, but brought more chances to travel and run in fun places such as NYC! My long run walk route is detailed in the photos below.
Midtown Manhattan to…

To Union Square Park,

to Carrie Bradshaw’s apartment, to…

Greenwich Village to…

the Hudson River Trail to …
to 20130904-184734.jpg
Battery Park to…
the Statue of Liberty to…
Financial District to…
the Brooklyn Bridge to…

Brooklyn to…
the Manhattan Bridge to…

Manhattan to…
Chinatown to…

the Subway to…

eat this yummy cupcake for a famished runner!

Then of course there was the miles of walking to take in the sites like…
Grand Central Station,

Times Square,

Central Park,

FAO Schwartz,

And so much more!

I have a lot to be thankful for. Despite the ankle, this summer was awesome! When life gets stressful this school year I need to come back to this post to remind myself that life won’t always be like that. There will be a chance to catch my breath, run in great locations, and visit amazing cities again.

Until then I’m gearing up as best as I can for my marathon NEXT (insert major freak out sound) weekend. I’m so unprepared all I can do is laugh and hope I don’t fall down the canyon to an untimely death. Or maybe at that point it will be a welcomed break from the pain this race is going to ravage on me.

What summer memories will you cherish in the years to come?

{Friday Fab 5}

{#1-Local Beer}

Ryan and I love sampling local beer. I saw this brew a month ago and have been waiting for the perfect time to try them out. Tonight is my second night not working and at home in the past two weeks, so there was no time like tonight. We liked both Capital Brewery’s Lake House and Island Wheat. I added a flower from our backyard! Perfect.

Saw this in the parking lot of Walgreens. Truth!

{#3-Caprese Pasta Salad}

The flavor of this pasta salad was awesome! It was so unique; the fresh garlic and basil along with pine nuts gave this pasta dish a flavor all its own. Ry and I decided we might add some chicken next time for some extra summtin’ summtin’…;)

{#4-All Trails App}
2013-06-20 22.53.32
So the picture above is how I spent more time than I care to admit (hours) planning my runs for while we are on vacation for two weeks. While for some this might be a waste of time, it is the best guarantee I have for completing some high mileage weeks in deathly hot conditions, and increases the chances of running in some awesome locations. Plus, I LOVE running in new places, exploring new trails, and seeing new things. I’m giddy just thinking about it. Knowing where I’m completing each run, what the terrain will be like, and how to get there takes all of the guess work out of running while on vacation. Definitely worth it if you want to get your runs in. Check the All Trails app out for your phone which will find your location and tell you about nearby trails. You can also use their website after becoming a member. It is my go to for finding trails at home and on vacation.

2013-06-20 22.53.57
Summertime and warm weather mean popsicles. I mean who doesn’t like them; even the cast on Mad Men said so! I’d been looking for the perfect popsicles containers and I believe I’ve found them. I will be posting all about popsicles in a separate post because I try to keep Friday’s short. Today’s flavor, we will call Lime Berry, included blended strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, blueberries (3.5 cups), greek strawberry yogurt (1.5 cups), and fresh squeezed lime juice (from 1 lime). Cheaper than buying them in the store and way healthier, too.

What do you do in the summer to stay cool?

Happy Weekend!
