{Wisconsin Marathon Training-Week 14}

After this past week’s training we have a month to go-four more weeks. It seems so close and the second guessing and doubt is starting to creep in. By now I know this is totally normal, but for first timers it is such a mix of emotions.

This week the foot is feeling awesome, but I’ve come down with a mother of a chest cold. Despite not feeling awesomesauce, I pushed through and ran some good mileage. Ryan, too. Weather temperatures were all over the place. There was rain, snow, sleet, freezing rain, and sunshine. There was wind and there was calm. We ran it all this week.

Yup…we’re at this spot!

Monday-5 miles

Today should have been a rest day for me since I ran 15 miles the day before (first run in 11 days) and I was sore! I am helping coach middle school track on Monday’s though and it was just too nice of a day. I ran a couple miles with the kids and ran a few more when I got home.

Thursday-5 mile

We were making our angry and sad faces at the cold and sleet and snow. I had to take a break half way through because I couldn’t stop coughing. This only caused more coughing, but I do believe it helps break up some chest congestion.

Saturday-6.7 miles (trail run with walk breaks)

The weather was great (50 degrees and sun) and I was anxious to hit the trails for the first time since the snow has started to melt.  We headed to a nearby state forest to run some trails. I might have jumped the gun a bit as there was a fair amount of snow in places. The open spots were wet, muddy, and awesome.  Smelling leaves and spring was so rejuvenating.  There were plenty of walk breaks though because this chest cold gets me coughing and very out of breath.

Sunday-18 miles (Sarah) and 12 miles (Ryan)

20140406-190114.jpg

Since easing back into my long runs after my foot injury Ryan and I are on different pages with our long runs and that is ok. Today’s run was ok. My chest is filled with junk so I cough regardless of whether I’m running or laying on the couch so I chose running. Plus it was too nice to sit inside (60!)

My legs felt strong and the foot good. I ate a GU at mile 5, a sweet juicy pear at mile 11, and another GU at mile 15 because I was hungry and felt I needed it. It feels great to be back! I have to say though the past few months have been rough between the hurt foot and the chest cold. Even though it feels great to be back, I’m not saying the runs themselves have been really great. Every run has felt challenging or frustrating since I hurt my foot in mid-February. Once this cold is gone, I’m expecting to fall hard for running again-in love that is!

Tip of the Week: If you are sick know when to sit out a few days and when to run. If you are running a fever I usually recommend taking the day off from running. No fever, means you can run! If you truly feel terrible, then a day off will help you bounce back faster. I felt like I had a bit of a low-grade fever mid-week and felt zapped for energy. Later in the week, I was starting to feel better but still had the lingering and annoying hack going. Since I knew I didn’t have a fever, I didn’t let a cough become an excuse to sit out again. Get lots of rest, drink lots of water, and eat good foods to help your recover or ward off sickness in the first place.

Total Weekly Miles: 28.7 miles (Ryan) and 34.7 miles (Sarah)

Happy Training!

{enjoy fall…}

20131112-173820.jpg
With fall nearly over and cold weather temperatures here, I have to say I enjoyed this fall.

20131112-173656.jpg
But, I don’t think people know what that means. I don’t just mean I enjoyed it, I mean I got out in it and enjoyed all the changing season had to offer. And I documented it with lots of photos I love.

20131112-173513.jpg
I played in leaves crisp to the running shoes and bright to the eye. I explored the reds, oranges, yellows, and browns throughout my home state. I explored new trails and old trails taking in the sights of fall-shades so brilliant you almost can’t imagine them. I saw plants with their flowers long gone and trails blanketed with leaves. I ran through the woods enjoying the freedom and glory you only experience when alone just you and the trail.

20131112-173054.jpg
I hiked paths along rivers, lakes, streams, and forests…alone, with my husband, and with friends. I saw tracks, animals, and signs of old life in those woods. I watched leaves fall doing their delicate dance and swirl before falling to the ground for one last display of color.

20131112-173346.jpg
I listened to fall. I heard the wind blow through the trees, the branches and leaves creating their own music and rhythm like a fall symphony. I heard animals of fall collecting, gathering, scurrying, and seeming to enjoy the same things I was. I heard leaves fall from their trees and land ever so softly on the ground. I listened to the water move slowly and quickly soon to be stilled during winter months. I heard the light pounding pattern of my feet as they hit the soft ground below.

20131112-173247.jpg
I smelled the scents of fall. The crisp, earthly leaves…the grass and its greeness still holding on. I smelled the dirt that has a scent unique to fall as Mother Earth prepares for the cold days ahead. I smelled the crispness of cold fall mornings. I took in the scents of apples on trees and the smell of late flowers of autumn.

20131112-172630.jpg
I felt fall’s wind on my neck, in my hair, and on my ears. I felt nature’s contrast of cold mornings followed by autumn’s sun slowly warming me with sunshine. I felt raindrops on my face and the soft Earth beneath my feet-the perfect spring to a runner’s step. I felt leaves I collected in my hands, and the contrast of roughness of a tree’s bark compared to its leaves. I enjoyed the warmth of my morning coffee in my hands as I hiked through nature’s splendor.

20131112-173200.jpg
I thought about life. I worried about things big and small. I forgot my worries. I planned the trivial details of the week’s to do list. I dreamed big and let my imagination run wild. I thought about fears and losses. I remembered the things experiences I’m grateful for. I thought about my past. I imagined the future. I thought about nothing. I thought about everything.

20131112-172836.jpg
I danced, smiled, laughed, and felt full of contentment as I stood in falls subtle sounds, leaves falling all around me as if I were in a movie, taking in every color and painting a permanent picture in my mind to last me through the long days ahead while bottling the crisp scent of fall in the woods. I felt the peace that you only feel when you’ve spent a day in nature-a feeling another person or place can’t quite replace or create.

20131112-172719.jpg
When I say I enjoyed fall…that was what I meant.

20131112-172927.jpg
It had been too many years since I’ve enjoyed fall. I mean really enjoyed fall. There are only days left.

20131112-172459.jpg
Slow down. Get out there. Enjoy fall.

Pilgrim Pacer Race Report is almost done!

{Friday Fab 5}

What a week! Weather ups and downs aside (pretty much like my unprocessed eating and running this week), it is May and that is awesome!

{#1-Hiking}
2013-05-02 20.24.28
While the weather was amazing this past weekend, Ry and I took advantage of this and hit the trails. We were shocked to see snow on the ground yet in quite a few spots while hiking in Black River State Forest. We got in a sunny and hilly eight mile hike. Ah-Perfection! What state parks are must hike in Wisconsin? We’re always looking for new trails!

With warmer temperatures the need for water on our hikes and runs is (or was) back. We took my fuel belt for the hike and I was reminded just how much I love it. There is a pocket for your phone or a snack. Most importantly, it stays put with the weight on my back side and doesn’t make my back sweat like my Camelbak. I despise carrying water on any run or hike!

{#3-Grilling}
2013-05-02 20.42.56
We fired up the awesome grill I got last summer for a master’s graduation gift from my mom and stepdad this past weekend. Grilled chicken, veggies, and potatoes were yummy! Try this recipe for healthy potato fries-they were delish!

{#4-Runner’s World Magazine}
2013-05-02 20.41.00
I finished my Runner’s World magazine and love everything about this magazine. Even though I don’t consider myself a newbie runner anymore, I still enjoy Marc Parent’s monthly column-The Newbie Chronicles. I especially loved the end of this month’s column which discussed his son running cross country and how runners are just different than other sports participants. Check out his column newbie or not! The link above takes you to a few years worth of columns. You’ll laugh, be inspired, and relate!

{#5-The Color Run}
2013-05-02 21.50.28
I’ve wanted to run “the happiest 5k on the planet” for a while and guess what the husband bought me for my birthday? You guessed it-entries into the The Color Run. What is better than running a race? Running it with your other love! Can’t wait! Anyone else done a color run? What did you think of it?

Happy Weekend!
