{Friday Fab 5-NYC Edition}

Since I am writing from New York AND had my first real run in four weeks yesterday, you’re going to notice a theme today people! Cue Alicia Keys-In New York…All photos were from my running route yesterday morning. New York City is an amazing place to run!

That is pure elation all over my face at the fact that I was running again (literally in this photo). I was really running for the first time in four weeks. The location might have had something to do with it, too.

The rest of my run route details-to be continued…

Anyone else run somewhere awesome lately?

Happy Weekend!

{Motivation Monday-What will you do for you today?}

Browsing through photos of New York last night I came across many photos of a show that is still a favorite of mine today, Sex and the City. This one got me thinking about the whole taking time to enjoy the things in life that make you happy. We can’t rely on other people to make us happy, rather that really should come from within.

20130805-100347.jpg
Today, do what makes you happy. Work to make this happen everyday. Go for a walk at lunch, try a new direction on your run, enjoy the sunshine, feel the wind on your face as you ride down a bike trail. You are doing this for you.

20130805-100722.jpg
Running, and now biking, is time for me. Time to release my worries, explore the world, and do something for me. Taking time for myself makes me a happier and more relaxed version of myself. It just so happens that a lot of my makes-me-happy-me-time involves getting outdoors and exercising. There is something about nature that makes me more appreciative of the world I live and what I have. I come back from a run, walk, bike ride, or hike- happy! And, guess what…being happy is motivating to keep doing what your doing!

What are you doing for you today?

Happy Monday!

{First Bike Rides}

Wednesday after my physical therapy appointment I busted out my bike for a long bike ride. After biking 10 miles Sunday and Tuesday and feeling like the rides were pretty easy, I felt ready to push it a bit further.

20130802-120557.jpg
During my first ride it felt so strange to be riding while also familiar. It brought back memories of having to ride my bicycle 4 miles to band practice with my clarinet case on my handlebars uphill both ways…in the sweltering heat! Oh, the torture my parents put me through aka character building!

20130802-120703.jpg
Living in Wisconsin we have such beauty all around us! I have checked out parts of many trails, but with a bike you can travel so many miles faster.

20130802-120811.jpg
For my longer ride I hopped on the Great River Bike Trail. I had planned to ride from Midway to Perrot State Park, however the rain changed my plans. I ended up biking from Onalaska to Trempealeau and back (32 miles round trip).

20130802-120923.jpg
The trails were awesome-well groomed, well marked, and scenic. They are all old railroad trail beds running through marsh, prairie, and along lakes and rivers.

20130802-121019.jpg
If you have never biked, check out these trails. They have short routes for shorter rides. If you are already into biking, then definitely get out there.

20130802-121333.jpg
You can ride as long or short as you want because the Great River Bike Trail connects to the La Crosse River Trail which connects to the Sparta-Elroy Bike Trail and that connects to the 400 State Bike Trail. That is over a hundred miles of trails through towns, scenic paths, bridges, and train tunnels. Check out http://www.bike4trails.com for maps and distances.

20130802-121524.jpg
I can’t wait to get out there next week to see more!

{Friday Fab 5}

I cannot believe July has come and past!
{#1-Garlic Lemon Herb Chicken}

20130802-001951.jpg
With the cooler temperatures this week I used the oven to make this AMAZING chicken. It was so simple, juicy, and delish! If you don’t want to turn the oven on, then you’ll have to save this for fall. It would be worth the wait! On Ryan’s official rating scale (5-I would eat it once a week to 1- I’d eat it if I had to) he gave it a 5!

{#2-Slow Cooker Chipotle Black Bean Dip}

20130802-002935.jpg
Another good recipe I’d normally reserve for fall, however this was just was too easy and went with the taco chicken we grilled. Add as much cheese and green onion as your taste buds like. I also added green chilies for more spice. For the link to the recipe click here.

{#3-No treadmills… Well maybe}

20130802-003716.jpg
The day after I posted this photo to Instagram I was running on a treadmill. Wait, did you catch that? I was RUNNING! Thursday at physical therapy I got to slow jog 3 minutes and run easy pace for 3 minutes. That is six minutes of running. Tomorrow is the three week mark on my ankle sprain. This is all positive. I was told no biking or running today and take it easy this weekend (while doing my ankle exercises 3X daily of course.) I will be able to try a mile or two on Tuesday before going to therapy! So exciting!

{#4-Biking}

20130802-004255.jpg
Sunday I rode my bike for the first time in 10 years. I have to say I really liked it. Heck, after weeks without running…I loved it! 52 miles of biking this week later and I’m planning my next long bike ride for Monday!

{#5-New York City}

20130802-004534.jpg
This picture is in our family room and has been for the past three plus years. Why would I share this, well…I will be going there next week. So excited! I’m hoping to have a picture or two of a run in Central Park if all goes well with therapy!

Anybody racing this weekend?
Happy Weekend!

{Rotary Lights 5k}

So, I’m not sure what has me thinking about Christmas, but we will call this Christmas in July perhaps. I was looking up races to run down the road and realized I’ve done this race several times and have no race report about it. The Rotary Lights 5k is one of my favorite races.
2012-12-09 16.35.06
First of all, I LOVE Christmas time. Like love, love, love. I start listening to Christmas music in early November, lights are a must in nearly every room, and we leave our tree up until at minimum the end of January on purpose. In reality it is often up until March because we end up not having time to take it down. My mother cannot believe this! Oh, the needles! I should add we always have a real tree, too. Fraser furs really don’t drop that many needles if cared for properly-even in March. Then we burn it at our annual pool party in August. The flames are usually a good 30 or 40 feet.
2012-12-09 16.37.13
Second-the race is one of the only in December. It takes place in one of my favorite parks that is all decked out for the holidays. How decked out? Well, they claim to be the largest display of lights in the midwest with over 2,000,000 lights. Each year it seems to get bigger. In addition to lights, there is music, reindeer, santa, hot chocolate, a live nativity scene, and Christmas trees decorated by community organizations around the park. All of this right along the mighty Mississippi River.

Rotary Lights 5k-2009

Rotary Lights 5k-La Crosse River Trail-2009

Third-the course. You run on the paths that go along the Mississippi before taking the torch lit bike path out along the La Crosse River Trail and then loop back to Riverside Park under a tunnel of lights and past the displays of lights. They serve hot chocolate at the finish.
2012-12-09 16.35.26
Fourth-the weather. You never know what the weather will bring. The first year it was run in blizzard conditions and the next year it was sunny and 20 degrees. The third year I signed up I actually drew the line. We had received 20+ inches of snow the day before and the windchill that Sunday was -20 degrees. Last year I ran a 10 miler with giant, wet snowflakes coming down before showing up to the start of the 5k as a long training run preparing for the RnR Arizona Marathon in January. 2013 who knows?

We did what most mid-20's people do when a snowstorm hits-play in it!

The year that wasn’t!  We did what most mid-20’s people do when a snowstorm hits; play in it!  I’m in the orange coveralls!

Fifth-dressing up! Elves, snowmen, santa, people in only shorts. Who knows what you will see when you run this race.

A santa hat is perfect for hiding your stocking hat!

A santa hat is perfect for hiding your stocking hat!

Lastly, the race is only $10 and you get an embroidered stocking hat. This is the cheapest race I’ve ever entered and you get so much for it. Plus, your $10 goes towards keeping the Rotary Light going. They also collect non-perishables for the local food pantry during the entire month the lights are going and they encourage runners to bring non-perishables, too.
2012-12-09 20.05.05
If you live in the Coulee Region this is an awesome family event. They cap registration fees at $27/family, too. This race has become part of our annual holiday traditions making it one of my favorites!

City sidewalks, busy sidewalks, dressed in holiday style. Soon it will be Christmas Day! Yes, I’m listening to Christmas music. Just for this post though. And it is less than five months away.

{Motivation Monday-Spirit of the Marathon}

I’m a sucker for watching movies that are both inspirational and involve sports. Look in our DVD bin and you will find far more sports movies than rom coms. True my husband also is a fan, but like he really bought any of them. From Field of Dreams to Remember the Titans to The Mighty Ducks they have been watched many times and seem not to lose there inspirational impact. The Ducks..err Geese are one of the reasons I’ve always loved the story of the geese so much that I use it in my classroom at the start of the school year every year.
2013-07-29 00.33.39
When it comes to running movies they are rarely as popularized as other. One of my favorites is Dean Karnazes’ story of running 50 Marathons in 50 States in 50 Days. Another favorite, Running the Sahara, documents three runners and their 111 day journey across the Sahara desert. What prompted this post in the first place was me reading last week that a sequel to my favorite running documentary is due out this year-Spirit of the Marathon II. I actually might have squealed; that’s how exciting this news was to me. So why so exciting?
Screen shot 2013-07-29 at 12.38.36 AM
Well, first of all, the original came out as I was training for my second marathon. Watching it captures all of the emotions that go into running a marathon. If you’ve ever stood at the starting line of a marathon or ran your own race, then I swear you’ve felt the emotions in the runners around you. First timers are nervous, excited, and anxious. Veterans are excited, perhaps uncertain about a PR, and hopeful for a good race. Charity runners are carrying thoughts of people they are running for and their own race-pride, hope, and worry. Elites are chasing for that win or top performance. There is happiness, pride, fear, anxiety, uncertaintly, and excitement all at once.

Grandma's Marathon 2

All those emotions were there. It is true what they say about your first; you’ll never forget it. Marathon that is.

For those who have ran a marathon watching this movie will bring back all those emotions of your first race. For those who have always wondered why someone would ever want to run that far, this movie offers a glimpse into those reasons and the complex emotions runners feel as they travel 26.2 miles in the Chicago Marathon. It also gives you perspective of first timers yet to complete the distance, seasoned runners, and elites. You hear from marathon greats like Frank Shorter, Paula Radcliffe, Deena Kastor, and Katherine Switzer.

Part of my pre-marathon routine is to watch this movie a week or two before my race to really get the emotions and excitement going. If you’ve ever wanted to relive the emotions or try to understand the emotions of a marathon, check out the preview of the original below. It is six minutes, but so worth it. I got goosebumps as I watched it again last night. I won’t give away any endings other than I always tear up. What can I say? I don’t cry in real life about a lot of things, but play a running movie and I ball.

The sequel, Spirit of the Marathon II, will come out later this fall!! In a similar format, it will follow runners as they train and run the Rome Marathon while also focusing on the impacts running marathons has on people and societies. The documentary looks at reasons why people run marathons from overcoming cancer, to breaking social norms, to seeing how far the human body can go. You can bet I signed up for the update emails AND I’ll be buying it as soon as it comes out. I know Ry just can’t wait (cue sarcasm). Click below to watch a preview.

If either of these videos doesn’t have you out the door to run or signing up for your next race, then maybe it is time to lace up anyway and get some fresh air to your brain.

Happy Monday!

No running again this week so I…

This year it was super simple, oh so yummy, and a bit healthier than cake. Guess what, we liked it way better than cake! Make brownies in a pizza pan however you normally do and let cool. Mix cream cheese and vanilla with mixer and layer over brownies. Top with lots of fruit and enjoy!

So crazy to think Marshall Ulrich ran across the United States at the age of 57 in a matter of 2 months. It just goes to show anything we put our mind to is possible!

{#3-did Daily Hiit…almost everyday}…

20130725-193842.jpg
These workouts are tough for me, but what I absolutely love is that they encourage you to do what you can, give suggestions to make the workouts easier or harder whatever your fitness level might be, and just be active. They recognize that most the battle of exercise is mental and keep pushing you. After 12 minutes or so of body rockin’ I was drenched in sweat and felt like I couldn’t do another push-up, sit-up, shoulder press…and on and on. I am sore and owe my first endorphins in days (14 to be exact) to the people behind Daily Hiit. Thank you!

Well, I at least used up a gift card while feeding my Lululemon addiction so it wasn’t so bad on the wallet.

What running, sports, or endurance books would you recommend reading?

Happy Weekend!

{Pour Some Sugar On Me}

With lots of time not running the past few days I spent it doing really important things like finishing all the seasons of Mad Men on Netflix and Pinteresting (now a verb, I believe) my way through future workouts, running gear, and infographics.  I love infographics; the clean lines, information, organization, oh, me and my Type A personality.  Look to see some of my favorites in the next few weeks.

Here is one about sugar consumption (from Forbes.com) something I struggle with all the time.  A dumpster worth in my lifetime!??? EEK!  I fall into that trap of oh, I just ran so I can eat _________ (fill in the blank with your favorite sweet treat).  I’m sure I’m not the only one…right?!  It is easy to forget that what we put into our bodies is equally as important as what we ask our bodies to do. How can we ask our bodies to perform at a high level, when we fuel it with junk? Something to think about anyway.  As I work on this clean eating process, I’m trying to make sure more of my sugar comes from natural sweet things like the amazing strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries we were eating today.  The real thing really is so much sweeter.

nursing-your-sweet-tooth

What is your sugar trap? How do you overcome it?

{Motivation Monday-Ab and Arm Challenge}

I am getting frustrated with my ankle. It is still swollen, bruised, and hurts. I know that I can’t change that so I am going to think ahead to the future. Whatever fitness I can build or maintain will only help me in the next few weeks.
Screen shot 2013-07-21 at 10.45.34 PM
I always have the best of intentions to do HIIT workouts, abs, arms, and stretching or yoga to tone the muscles while also following a training plan. The reality is following the training plan miles is often all I have time for. Now I don’t have that as an excuse. So this week if you are looking for a challenge, join me in this arm and ab challenge. The arm challenge I found on Pinterest; I take no credit for creating any of these workouts. The videos (click the link below the photo) are great for any exercises that are unfamiliar to you. Knowing what to do is important to not hurt yourself.

Monday’s Arm Challenge

Summer Arm Challenge-Click to learn more.

When it comes to high intensity interval workouts this site is where it’s at! What used to be known as Body Rock is now known as Daily HIIT. There short workouts are usually only 12 minutes, but don’t let that kid you. Those 12 minutes will be intense. Having a strong core is important for any physical endeavors. I already know this is going to hurt so good. Check out the video below to get your abs burning!

Whose joining me in an awesome ab and arm workout today? Anyone have any ab or arm workouts you’d recommend for this week?

Happy Monday!

{#1-Running On Empty by Marshall Ulrich}
2013-07-18 22.14.14
I mentioned this book earlier this spring. To be honest, I’m only half way through it. I really enjoy reading it, but I just don’t have a lot of free time where I choose reading first. With no running this week I’ve had more time on my hands to do some reading. I took a photo of the above text from his book because it is the FIRST time I’ve ever heard someone describe their experiences running long distance in the way that he has. I too have an imagination when I run and think about what the world was like, would be like, and other thoughts of the like. My imagination goes wild at times! These are usually my favorite runs when this happens. Does this happen to anyone else?

{#2-Bye, Bye Ben & Jerry’s and other treats}
2013-07-18 23.55.11
Since I’m not exercising like normal, I’m not burning the normal calories I would be. The simple math of the matter is there is less room for treats like my favorite buds Ben & Jerry unless I want to end up like on of their flavors-Chunky Monkey. 😉 I’ve always felt running is one of my loves for many reasons. While the number one reason I run is because of the way it makes me feel mentally and physically, my love of desserts is on the list, too.

{#3-Country Jam}
I’m off to Jam today to see some of these awesome people with some awesome people! I’m pretty sure a sprained ankle is the best excuse to look for buy a pair of cowboy boots to wear to the country event. I mean I could wear my brace underneath it while at Jam. Ry did not love this idea! We will see!

{#5-Stilettos in New Orleans}
2013-07-08 22.07.25
I just finished making our vacation video that contains 700+ photos from our two week road trip. I saw this one and remembered I forgot to share. On Bourbon street there is an “establishment” called Stilettos; I had to take a picture under the sign since it’s half my blog title. Maybe the flats in the photo were a sign I wouldn’t be wearing stilettos any time soon.

Happy Weekend, Y’all!
